Planet a investment guide
This page is home to our tentative practical guide to more ethical and sustainable investment and fossil fuel divestment for South Africans who want a liveable planet and healthy society. The latest edition is from October 2024, and comes with a handbook.
Our handbook, in glorious technicolour, introduces the guide and provides practical steps towards divestment. This lists only three South African funds (international funds are in the full guide).
The full-length version includes funds available in South Africa which invest in emerging, global and offshore markets (with explanations of the differences between these categories and a host of other helpful information).
Watch our Planet A Investment Guide Launch video
We hosted a Planet A Investment Launch in October 2024. We included an engaging panel discussion with Preanka Naidoo (Sanlam), Cerin Maduray (WWF), Waleed Hendricks (Old Mutual), and Traci Porter (Efficient Wealth), along with a compelling video by Johan Rockström on the urgent need to respect planetary boundaries.
Key takeaways from the discussion:
ESG funds outperform traditional funds over time, yet many financial advisors still hold misconceptions about their impact on returns.
Advisors need more training on ESG investing and its benefits for their clients—a clear opportunity for action.
An estimated US$90 trillion is expected to flow from baby boomers to millennials, with social investing playing a key role in preserving intergenerational wealth.
Strengthening “polluter pays” policies is essential but remains poorly enforced in South Africa, as seen with Sasol’s air quality breaches and delayed carbon tax implementation.
